If you’re like a lot of Americans, you upgrade your smart phone regularly. And if you have service with Sprint and order your new phone online, there’s a good chance you’ll get it dropped off by UPS.

However, that’s only part of the role UPS plays in the delivery of many Sprint smartphones. They also configure them at their facility in Louisville, Kentucky. We don’t typically think about the men and women in brown setting up our smartphones for us, but that’s exactly what’s happening – and it makes a lot of sense.

UPS is busy developing adjacent business opportunities. Think about it. The phones come through their facilities anyway, why not stockpile some there and have UPS deal with the configuration issue? It makes life easier for Sprint. It’s one less thing they have to worry about, so if UPS can get organized to do it, Sprint can shorten its delivery times and lessen the amount of warehouse space it requires…
