1. Know your audience
Who are you trying to talk to? Think about your average customer or reader – you could give them a name if you really want. We suggest Bertha or Sheniqua.
How old are they? What are their interests? What’s important to them? What kind of language is most likely to engage them?
Let’s say you’re trying to target bargain hunters with a huge clearance sale. In this case you might use words (written in all-caps to give maximum impact) such as ‘CHEAP BARGAINS’, ‘MASSIVE SAVINGS’, ‘HUGE DISCOUNTS’, ‘OUR BIGGEST SALE EVER!’ and ‘CRAZY PRICES NEVER TO BE REPEATED!’ – even though it’s highly likely those ‘crazy’ prices will be repeated…
