People Do Not Follow Blogs – They Read Articles

What do you do when you enter the URL of a highly established blog (something the likes of, say, TechCrunch) into your browser? Do you read every article you see on the front page? Likely, you don’t.

Instead, you quickly skim through the headlines to see if there is something that actually interests you. You click on those headlines that seem relevant or intriguing, then you read the first several lines. If the article continues to be of interest to you (very often, it does not), you keep reading. Once finished, you either switch to another news (or otherwise) outlet or go back to the front page and quickly continue the process. Then you go back to work.

Here is a secret: you are no different than anyone else. Big blogs pump out 10 to 30 articles per day because with a heap of articles to choose from, chances are higher that the potential reader will click on at least one (if not more) of the article titles. Headlines must be optimized and catchy to further enhance the click-rate. Blogs allow guest posts to vary the content and ensure different topics appeal to a wide array of people.
